The Dwarf Pencilfish is a lovely colourful small shoaling fish that is best kept in groups of at least 6. They prefer a well planted tank, espcially if in a smaller shoal. They love sunken wooden structures and a light debris based bottom.

Current Size – 1.5cm - 2cm

Adult Length – 4cm

Temperature Range – 21 – 27 °C

pH Range – 5.0 – 8.0

Tanks Mates and Compatibility Very peaceful but does not make an ideal community fish due to its small size and rather timid nature.

It’s best kept with similarly-sized, peaceful characids and smaller callichthyid or loricariid catfishes.

It also makes an ideal dither fish for Apistogramma spp. and other dwarf cichlids since  it tends to inhabit the middle-to-upper regions of the tank, and does not actively predate fry.

It’s very much a gregarious animal so buy as many as possible, ideally 10 or more, as when kept in larger groups any aggression is spread between individuals plus the fish are bolder and exhibit more natural behaviour.

Feeding –  In the aquarium it will accept dried foods of a suitable size but should also be offered daily meals of small live and frozen fare such as Artemia nauplii, Moina, grindal worm, etc.

Please note – Some images used are library photos and will show the colour potential at a fully mature size, as our fish are juvenilles they may vary.

We always aim to supply the fish as close to the purchase size as possible. However if this is not possible, we will always contact you to discuss.

The fish are selected at random however you are welcome to make a note on the order and the fish manager will do his best for you. This is dependent on current stock at the time of your order.

    Review:
I ordered six of these and am extremely pleased, mine range from about two to three centimetres in length and they are already colourful. I like the way these fish move and will get some more as a bigger shoal will be spectacular.
