The Ember tetra is one of the smallest tetras. They are a hardy little fish with lovely colouration that contrasts beautifully with the plants in a community aquarium. They are also a perfect company for many shrimps etc. in smaller aquaria.

It is a school fish, like most Tetra, and should be kept in a group of 6 or more.  If in a group, it can be bold and active, whilst remaining peaceful with its tank mates.

Species – Ember Tetra - Hyphessobrycon amandae

Current Size – 1cm - 1.5cm

Adult Length – 2.5cm

Temperature Range – 24 - 27 °C

pH Range – 6.0 – 7.5

Tanks Mates and Compatibility - Very peaceful and will not  compete well with very boisterous or much larger tankmates.

In a community it’s best kept with similarly-sized, peaceful characids, smaller callichthyid or loricariid catfishes and sedate surface-dwellers such as hatchetfishes.

It also makes an ideal dither fish for Apistogramma spp. and other dwarf cichlids since  it tends to inhabit the middle-to-upper regions of the tank, and does not normally hunt fry.

In a more general community set-up it can be combined with smaller rasboras, barbs, anabantoids, etc.

It’s gregarious and naturally forms schools meaning a minimum of 8-10 specimens is the recommended purchase since the fish will be less shy and display more interesting behaviour.

Feeding – In the aquarium it will accept dried foods of a suitable size but should also be offered daily meals of small live and frozen fare such as Artemia nauplii, Moina, grindal worm, etc.

We recommend:

Please note – Some images used are library photos and will show the colour potential at a fully mature size, as our fish are juvenilles they may vary.

We always aim to supply the fish as close to the purchase size as possible. However if this is not possible, we will always contact you to discuss.

The fish are selected at random however you are welcome to make a note on the order and the fish manager will do his best for you. This is dependent on current stock at the time of your order.

Bought 15 ember tetras who arrived very well packed in two bags. On arrival their color was quite dull but they were very active. First day they were a bit shy with my but less that 24 later they are looking much brighter red and coming to say hi to the tank glass. They school all over the tank together and are getting on great with my two dwarf gourami and my 10 pygmy corys. First time I order from tropco and Im very impressed by how well all the animals look

Bought 6 of these for a (previously) shrimp only aquarium, all arrived safely, were fully coloured up within the first 5-10 minutes and ate a decent amount of baby brine shrimp right away. A much needed dash of colour to the tank! Great quality fish!

Great little tetra. I could only fit 2 in my tank but they have already teamed up with my cardinals and rummy nosed tetras. Had never seen them before but they are plucky little fish and clearly make friends easily :D

Added ten more to my small tank all looking healthy and delivered as promised. These attractive small Tetras look and seem happier now they are in a larger shoal.
