Redtail Catfish
Phractocephalus hemiolipterus
Please research this catfish before considering owning one. It will grow very fast. It is messy and can reach lengths of over 1 metre. This is not for the average aquarium keeper
The redtail cat is an iconic catfish the world over. It is regarded as a sport fish in much of South Amercia and is now stocked in many fisheries in the Far East. Please do not be under any illusion that it will stay small in your aquarium. If you are thinking like this then please do not consider one as there are far better options to look at!
It is actually easy to keep if you have the right tank to house it in. It has a big appetite and so filtration should be up to the job.

Tanks Mates and Compatibility – This cat fish is not particularly aggressive but , like most cats, if it can fit in its mouth then it will eat it!
Feeding – Can be fussy eaters. Love small snails and can be encouraged to eat live or frozen foods. Not keen on flakes or pellets.
