The Axolotl is an amazing aquatic Salamander, originally from Mexico, and they look like a cross between a lizard and a fish. They are easy to keep providing they have good water, food and plenty of hiding places.

Make sure the tank has a secure lid, as it's not uncommon for these animals to try to jump out of their enclosure. A land area is unnecessary in the tank for these fully aquatic animals. At a minimum, the water depth should be slightly more than the length of your axolotl. But adding extra depth will help with water quality and give your animal more room to move.

The amazing thing about Axolotl is that if they damage a limb or lose it in a battle with another axolotl or a fish, they will regrow it!

Tank Information: Minimum 2ft long/ 75L tank for one adult, + 1ft length/ 40L for every other adult in the same tank. Filtration is recommended to be double the size of the tank i.e; 100L tank = 200L worth of filtration as axolotls are messy animals with a high bioload and need good water parameters in order to thrive. Gravel of any kind is dangerous and should never be used, their mouths act like a vacuum and will inevitably suck up and swallow small objects which can lead to impactation or internal bleeding. Sand can be safely used for axolotls that are over 5 inches long, you can also have bare bottom, slate, tile or artificial aquarium grass. Any rocks must be at least 2x the size of an adult's head to avoid being swallowed, this includes any décor such as moss balls. Décor should be soft to avoid damaging their delicate skin and they require plenty of hiding places to escape from the light as their eyes are sensitive and do not handle lots of light well.

Tank Mates: Axolotls are species only and must never be kept with other fish, snails, plecos etc. as they will attack an axolotl’s external gills and slime coat. They may live with other axolotls of the same gender and similar size peacefully if given the correct environment.

Feeding Information: An axolotl’s main diet should be dendrobaena earthworms. You can also feed sinking carnivore pellets, repashy grub pie, sinking salmon pellets or axolotl specific pellets alongside earthworms. Never use worms from your garden, always source earthworms from a professional tackle/ bait retailer to avoid pesticides and parasites being introduced to your animal. Treats include bloodworm, blackworms, defrosted raw salmon and prawn, wax worms. For stimulation, you may add ghost or river shrimp occasionally for them to snack on. Treats should be limited to once a week at most as these types of foods contain little nutrition.
