The Apistogramma macmasteri are an attractive species that are relatively peaceful, providing they have an area that they can call home. As with all Dwarf Cichlids, they prefer a slightly acidic and soft water and the Macmaster's cichlid can struggle if it is introduced to a new aquarium. It prefers a stable and mature environment. The males are slightly larger and more colourful than the females

Special Requirements – Floating cover and natural decor is prefered, and regular water changes every week are essential.
Tanks Mates and Compatibility -Best maintained alone or with small ‘dither’ fishes such as Nannostomus spp., and ideally should not be mixed with other Apistogramma.
This species can apparently be maintained in pairs only when other, conspecific pairs are visible in adjacent tanks (Römer, 2006) as this distracts them from attacking each other.
Ideal Number to Keep - It’s thus preferable to keep a group consisting of several males with up to three times as many females in a larger set-up.
Feeding - In the aquarium live and frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, Moina and chironomid larvae (bloodworm) should be offered regularly although most species will also learn to accept dried alternatives with pelleted products generally preferred to flake.
