The Mascara barb is truely spectacular large barb that is rarely seen in the UK. It is found in South West India where it inhabits clear streams and rivers. They are a shoaling fish that should be kept in groups. Both sexes will show stunning red colouration as they mature but the males will develop elaborate dorsal filaments and res dorsals as well.

Temperature Range – 20 - 26°C

pH Range – 6.0 – 7.5

Special Requirements -  The Mascara barb is fairly easy to keep although it does need good flow with quality and well oxygenated water.

Tanks Mates and Compatibility – Generally peaceful to any fish that is too large to be considered food. They are very active feeders and so tank mates will need to be robust to get their fair share.

Ideal Number to Keep – It is a schooling species by nature, and at least 6-10 specimens should be purchased.

Feeding – They are an omnivores and should be fed a good quality varied died that includes crushed flake and live or frozen food as well as vegetable matter.
