The Honey Gourami is a shy and peaceful fish and likes its environment to be the same, with gentle flow rates and plenty of plant cover. They are an anabantoid (labyrinth fish) which means that they do breath atmospheric air as well as dissolve oxygen. This means that they do require access to the surface.

As they mature, the males will turn a Yellowy Orange whiilst the Females stay a Grey/Brown but develop stunning subtle colouring.

Species – Honey Gourami - Trichogaster Chuna

Current Size – 2cm - 2.5cm

Adult Length –  7cm (Male) 5cm (Female)

Temperature Range – 22 - 28°C

pH Range – 6.0 – 7.5

Special Requirements - These are a nervous and peaceful fish and require a peaceful environment. They thrive in smaller aquariums

Tanks Mates and Compatibility – Honey Gourami need tank mates that have the same nature as them. They not cope with lively or boisterous tank mates. Tankmates must be chosen with care since this species is slow-moving and will easily be intimidated or outcompeted for food by larger or more vigorous tankmates.

Peaceful, pelagic cyprinids make good choices as do less active loaches such as Pangio spp. or certain nemacheilids. Territorial or otherwise aggressive species are best omitted.

Ideal Number to Keep – Though not gregarious in the sense of schooling fishes it does seem to require interaction with conspecifics and displays more interesting behaviour when maintained in numbers, meaning the purchase of no less than 4-6 specimens is recommended. Groups develop noticeable hierarchies and you’ll often see dominant individuals chasing away their rivals at feeding time or when occupying their favourite spot.

Feeding – It accepts most foods offered in the aquarium, and a good quality dried food is acceptable as the staple diet. Supplement this with regular meals of small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm for the fish to develop the best health and colouration.

Please note – Some images used are library photos and will show the colour potential at a fully mature size, as our fish are juveniles they may vary.

We always aim to supply the fish as close to the purchase size as possible. On rare occasions if this is not possible we will contact you.

The fish are selected at random however you are welcome to make a note on the order and the fish manager will do his best for you, requests are dependent on stock at the time of your order.

Ordered 8 a few weeks ago. When they first arrive I thought they were all male, within a few hours once settled they brought out some amazing colour. Females are brilliant and males are great. On the small side but well worth it.
