This little gourami (in it’s different colour forms) is very closely related to the Dwarf Gourami, although it is generally a little smaller. A member of the Anabantoids, with the ability to breath atmospheric oxygen as well as dissolved oxygen.

This little Gourami is fairly durable and has long been recommended as a good choice for community tanks and beginners. It is excellent for the smaller aquarium as it is peaceful with everybody and almost shy. As long as the aquarium is properly set-up and maintained, this fish will thrive.

Species – Red Robin Gourami (Red Honey Gourami) - Trichogaster Chuna

Current Size – 1.5cm - 2cm

Adult Length –  5cm

Temperature Range – 23 - 28°C

pH Range – 6.0 – 7.5

Special Requirements - These are a nervous and peaceful fish and require a peaceful environment. They thrive in smaller aquariums

Tanks Mates and Compatibility – Honey Gourami need tank mates that have the same nature as them. They not cope with lively or boisterous tank mates. Tankmates must be chosen with care since this species is slow-moving and will easily be intimidated or outcompeted for food by larger or more vigorous tankmates.

Peaceful, pelagic cyprinids make good choices as do less active loaches such as Pangio spp. or certain nemacheilids. Territorial or otherwise aggressive species are best omitted.

Ideal Number to Keep – Though not gregarious in the sense of schooling fishes it does seem to require interaction with conspecifics and displays more interesting behaviour when maintained in numbers, meaning the purchase of no less than 4-6 specimens is recommended. Groups develop noticeable hierarchies and you’ll often see dominant individuals chasing away their rivals at feeding time or when occupying their favourite spot.

Feeding – It accepts most foods offered in the aquarium, and a good quality dried food is acceptable as the staple diet. Supplement this with regular meals of small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm for the fish to develop the best health and colouration.

Please note – Some images used are library photos and will show the colour potential at a fully mature size, as our fish are juveniles they may vary.

We always aim to supply the fish as close to the purchase size as possible. On rare occasions if this is not possible we will contact you.

The fish are selected at random however you are welcome to make a note on the order and the fish manager will do his best for you, requests are dependent on stock at the time of your order.

I bought a couple of these, and they are settling into there new home. The Carrier called the day before to check that I would be in so the fish were not put under any extra stress, which was a nice touch to the service, as they told me I could have either a morning or afternoon slot. Excellent service from The Trop Co, and will be buying from them again soon
