The Polypterus are relatively peaceful fish with the right tank mates, but as well as needing a big tank they also have big appetites so we would not advise housing them with tank mates that are small enough to fit in their mouth. Plenty of hiding spaces should be provided along with a smooth substrate and a secure tank cover as they are known to escape if given the chance.

Temperature Range – 24 - 28°C
pH Range – 6.2 – 7.8
Special Requirements - A large tank with plenty of floor space.
Tanks Mates and Compatibility – Should be kept with other Polypterus species and similar tank mates such as Knife Fish & Synadontis. Smaller tank mates should be avoided as they will be seen as lunch!
Feeding – They are carnivorous and enjoy meaty foods including prawns, white fish, frozen or fresh tubifex, bloodworm etc.

We always aim to supply the fish as close to the purchase size as possible. On rare occasions if this is not possible we will contact you.
The fish are selected at random however you are welcome to make a note on the order and the fish manager will do his best for you, requests are dependent on stock at the time of your order.
