A freshwater hermit crab is a nocturnal, social crustacean with a soft, spirally-curved abdomen that it protects by carrying it inside an empty mollusk shell. They have a hard exoskeleton on their front half, including 10 legs (two are claws), stalked eyes, and two pairs of antennae for feeling, tasting, and sensing vibrations. As they grow, they must find larger shells to move into.
