Freshwater stingrays are flattened, cartilaginous fish with wide, oval-shaped bodies and long, whip-like tails that bear one or more venomous spines for defense. They live in the bottoms of tropical and subtropical rivers in South America, Asia, and Africa, favoring sandy or muddy substrates where they bury themselves to ambush prey like small fish, clams, and crustaceans. Their topside features eyes and spiracles (respiratory openings), while their mouths and gills are located on their undersides.
