Bucktooth Tetra

Exodon paradoxus

A unique and fascinating freshwater fish. Despite its misleading name, it does not have prominent "bucktooth" teeth. Instead, it has specialized, pointed teeth adapted for scraping scales off other fish. Bucktooth tetrast will aggressively attack and feed on the scales of other fish. They are best kept alone or in large shoals, as smaller groups will often fight and injure each other.

Tanks Mates and Compatibility - These are an agressive species of tetra and so should be kept with caution, they are known to eat the scales of other fish! keeping this species in larger numbers aids in the reduction of agressive behaviours.

Ideal Number to Keep - Mid-level feeders, they are best kept in schools of six or more, for the shoaling effect when they move around the tank. They shoal naturally in the wild and are thus more brightly coloured and more active when kept as a shoal as opposed to singly.

Feeding - Happy on most foods, keep well fed to ensure they do not see their tank mates as a potential snack...

Please note – Some images used are library photos and will show the colour potential at a fully mature size, as our fish are juveniles they may vary.
