Spanish Ribbed Newt
Pleurodeles waltl
A remarkable amphibian native to Spain and Portugal. Its distinctive feature is its ability to puncture its own skin with its sharp ribs, allowing it to push out poisonous skin secretions as a defense mechanism against predators. This adaptation, known as autotomy, serves as a potent deterrent against would-be attackers. Spanish ribbed newts typically inhabit freshwater habitats such as ponds, streams, and slow-moving rivers, where they feed on small invertebrates.
