Diamond Tetra

Moenkhausia pittieri

The Diamond Tetra, native to South America, enchants aquarists with its shimmering scales resembling diamonds. This is a peaceful shoaling species that shoud be kept in groups of 6 or more. They prefer a well planted tank and a darker decor will show off their glittering appearance beautifully.

Current Size – 3-4cm

Adult Length – 6cm

Temperature Range – 24 - 28°C

pH Range – 5.8 – 7.4

Special Requirements - It is best to provide your Tetra with a mixed environment with some open swimming space and some plant cover. It is sensitive to high nitrate so a high water quality is a must.

Tanks Mates and Compatibility – The Diamond tetra is both peaceful and lively, and its glittery appearance makes a good contrast to more dark substrate. It can be kept with most livebearers, danios, rasboras, other tetras and peaceful bottom dwellers such as Corydoras or smaller Loricariids. It also makes a suitable companion for more robust dwarf cichlids such as kribensis, and due to its somewhat rounded shape is unlikely to end up on the menu if combined with larger species such as angel fish.

Ideal Number to Keep – Mid-level feeders, they are best kept in schools of six or more, for the shoaling effect when they move around the tank. They shoal naturally in the wild and are thus more brightly coloured and more active when kept as a shoal as opposed to singly.

Feeding – A most unfussy, omnivorous species. Flakes and granules, along with regular feedings of small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and bloodworm are recommended.

Please note – Some images used are library photos and will show the colour potential at a fully mature size, as our fish are juveniles they may vary.

The fish are selected at random however you are welcome to make a note on the order and the fish manager will do his best for you, requests are dependent on stock at the time of your order.
