Longnose Whiptail Catfish

Sturisoma Barbatum

Sturisoma barbatum, commonly known as the whiptail catfish, is a species of freshwater fish native to South America, particularly in the Amazon River basin. Recognised for its elongated body, long pectoral fins, and distinctive whisker-like barbels, it belongs to the Loricariidae family. The Sturisoma barbatum is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish, often kept in aquariums for its unique appearance and algae-eating habits. It thrives in well-oxygenated, clear waters with moderate flow and prefers a diet consisting of plant matter, biofilm, and small invertebrates.

Current Size – 7cm

Adult Length – 28cm

Temperature Range – 20 - 22°C

pH Range – 6.4 – 7.2

Water Hardness – 15 °H

Special Requirements - They will need at least a 50L tank with plenty of open space.

Tanks Mates and Compatibility – One of the most peaceful catfish around, these can be combined with many other species. In a biotope setup, good tankmates include small characins, ApistogrammaCorydoras and other quiet Loricariids. However, it can be kept in most communities of peaceful fish. Don’t keep it with anything too vigorous or aggressive as it will become very retiring, and will easily be out-competed for food. It’s not territorial unless spawning and is best kept in a small group.

Please enquire for exact compatibility if unsure.

Feeding – In the aquarium it proves omnivorous and will accept both sinking dried foods, vegetable matter (including blanched spinach, courgette, kale etc.) and live and frozen fare such as bloodworm or daphnia.

Please note – Some images used are library photos and will show the colour potential at a fully mature size, as our fish are juveniles they may vary.
