Indonesian Leaf Fish
The Indonesian Leaf Fish (Pristolepis grootii) is a striking and rarely available freshwater species prized for its distinctive appearance, hardy nature and fascinating behaviour. Native to the slow-moving rivers, forest streams and peat swamps of Indonesia, Malaysia and Borneo, this attractive fish develops rich bronze, olive and golden colouration with subtle iridescent highlights that become even more impressive as it matures.
With its deep, laterally compressed body and elegant finnage, Pristolepis grootii makes an excellent feature fish in a well-planted aquarium. While generally peaceful towards similarly sized tank mates, it is an opportunistic predator and should not be housed with very small fish that may be viewed as food. Its inquisitive personality and calm temperament make it an enjoyable species to observe, often becoming confident enough to recognise its keeper during feeding.
Growing to approximately 20–25 cm, the Indonesian Leaf Fish is best suited to medium to large aquariums with plenty of driftwood, rocks and dense planting to recreate its natural habitat. Slightly subdued lighting and natural décor help encourage its best colours while providing security.

Special Requirements - They prefer soft, slightly acidic water and are best kept in a small school.
Tanks Mates and Compatibility – Pristolepis grootii is best kept alongside other peaceful medium to large fish that are too large to be considered prey. Suitable companions include larger barbs, rainbowfish, gouramis, peaceful cichlids and robust catfish. Avoid mixing with very small community fish or highly aggressive species that may cause stress.
Feeding – Carnivores, they prefer live food in the form of daphnia, brine shrimp or blood worm.
