The Convict cichlid is one of the most popular of all South American Cichlids. This is due to it being incredibly hardy and easy to care for which makes it an ideal starter fish. They are easy to breed but can be aggressive and territorial. They should be provided with plenty of hiding caves so that they can keep their own territory.

Adult Length: 7.5 – 10cm (The male is larger).

Temperature Range: 23 - 27°C

pH Range: 6.5-8

Special Requirements: They prefer a slow moving aquarium. They should not be introduced to an immature aquarium as they are susceptible to deteriorating water quality. Providing rocks, caves, and hiding spots is essential. May dig or rearrange substrate so use secure decorations.

Tanks Mates:  Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other Central or South American cichlids, catfish (like plecos), or robust barbs. Avoid slow or delicate fish, especially in smaller tanks. Can be kept as a bonded pair, but breeding behavior may increase aggression.

Feeding:  Omnivorous and not picky. Feed a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter (like spirulina or blanched spinach). A balanced diet helps support coloration and reduce aggression.
