The White Cloud Mountain minnow is a hardy species of freshwater fish and coldwater fish often kept in aquaria. The WCMM is a unique fish in the way that it can withstand cold temperatures. This makes it ideal for unheated house tanks of all sizes. They are very docile when kept correctly. They are a schooling fish and the males display to the females by opening their colourful fins. They do occasionally fight with other males but this rarely results in injury.

Species – White Cloud Mountain Minnow - Tanichthys Albonubes

Current Size – 1.5cm – 2cm

Adult Length – 3cm – 4cm

pH Range – 6.0 – 8.5

Water Hardness – 90 – 357ppm

Special Requirements - No special requirements, providing you take into account their small stature. The WCMM is a very placid fish but it does prefer to be in a cooler aquarium than most ‘tropical’ fish. They are prone to being eaten by larger tanks mates.

Tanks Mates and Compatibility – Very peaceful indeed and an ideal resident of a well-maintained community  set-up provided its temperature requirements are considered.

Other species that enjoy comparable conditions include Pethia conchoniusP. padamya, ‘Puntius semifasciolatus, and Macropodus opercularis (it occurs sympatrically with the latter two in nature) but it doesn’t make a suitable companion for goldfish despite often being sold as such.

In a stream-style tank it can also be combined with rheophilic species from genera such as DanioDevario, and Garra as well as many loaches.

Ideal Number to Keep – t’s a schooling species by nature and really should be kept in a group of at least 8-10 specimens.

Maintaining it in decent numbers will not only make the fish less nervous but will result in a more effective, natural-looking display. Males will also display their best colours as they compete with one other for female attention.

Feeding – In the aquarium it’s easily-fed but the best condition and colours offer regular meals of small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia, and Artemia alongside good quality dried flakes and granules, at least some of which should include additional plant or algal content.
